Today, 12 October, is Stem Cell Awareness Day and in celebration of the day, we’re taking a look at the strides that have been taken in the field of gerontology under stem cell research. Though stem cell research did not begin until 1981
when scientists discovered ways to derive embryonic stem cells from early mouse
embryos, it was over fifty years ago that researchers first found that old age
is associated with depletion and loss of function of stem cells. Since then,
great leaps and bounds have been made in approaching stem cells and their
effect on aging including hundreds of early-phase clinical trials using
mesenchymal stem cells.
